As a farmers daughter the Abergavenny Cattle Market has always been a subject that is close to my heart. When I heard that it would be closing it's gates for good I decided to document it's last years of trading with a collection of paintings. I spent two years painting, sketching and taking photographs at the cattle market and in that time I had a fantastic insight into the community and social aspect of it whilst also getting to know some of the wonderful characters for whom the market was a regular part of their lives and essential to their livlihood. Of course realised that as farming moved on, a new facility will be better suited to purpose but I couldn't help but feel sad to see such a historic part of the town gone for good.
I love colour and I thoroughly enjoyed picking out the most unexpected colours in the scenes that I painted. I used a variety of medium throughout the collection including acrylics, pastels, charcoals, inks and collage. You will find snippets of information hidden amongst the images, sales records, newspaper and magazine cuttings - all relevant to the market itself. I wanted to weave a bit of history into the paintings - names, dates, prices paid as well as some reference to the group KALM who fought so hard to keep the market open. I felt it would add another dimension to the paintings whilst also serving as a marker in terms of date.
